Jesus' Coming Back

‘Gen Z is Hungry for Jesus,’ Upperoom Founder, Pastor Says

The founder of the global prayer and worship movement, Upperroom, acknowledged an increase in GenZers who want the presence of God.

“There’s a real attraction that Gen Z has to the Gospel, to the presence of God, to something authentic and something real,” Pastor Michael Miller told The Christian Post in an interview.

“Gen Z is looking for Jesus. They’re hungry for Jesus, and they’re tearing down the scaffolding that we put around Jesus,” he said

Miller shared that about 400 Upperroom volunteers spend at least 80 hours a week praying in the morning, noon, and night. Meanwhile, hundreds attend the church’s in-person Tuesday prayer meeting, which Miller says that extended times of prayer have been drawing GenZers.

“A lot of them are coming in and actually getting saved,” he explained. “They’re rediscovering their faith. They’re looking for a cause to give themselves to, and I think hosting God’s presence and building communities marked by this reality is really resonating with them.”

During Sunday services, people, particularly youth, arrive at the church as early as 7:30 am even though the service starts at 10:30.

“Millennials and Gen Zers, they wait in line for two hours to come to church, and so there’s a hunger and an awakening that I see happening,” Miller continued. “God is more than a theology; [Christianity] is more than a belief system. He’s (Jesus) a man that we’re after. He’s a man that we’re burning with first love passion, and I’m loving what God’s doing.”

Several revivals have taken place across the U.S. this year, with the most prominent being at Auburn University in Alabama.

Last month, Christian leaders held a worship night called Unite Auburn, in which around 6,000 students attended Auburn’s Neville Arena, and some 200 were baptized.

“It was such a move of God,” Jennie Allen, Christian author, speaker, and founder of the IF: Gathering, told CBN News. “There is something very special happening right now. I believe in their hearts. I think they are hungry for God and want God in a very real way; this is not manufactured.”
