32,000 More Babies Will Be Born Annually Thanks to Overturning of Roe: Study

The overturning of Roe v. Wade will result in 32,000 additional births this year, according to a first-of-its-kind study that examined and compared the data in pro-life and pro-choice states.

The study by the Institute of Labor Economics found that “in the first six months of 2023, births rose by an average of 2.3 percent in states enforcing total abortion bans compared to a control group of states where abortion rights remained protected.” That amounts to “approximately 32,000 additional annual births resulting from abortion bans.”

“These effects vary across demographic groups and tend to be larger for younger women and women of color,” the study said. “These effects also vary substantially across ban states, with much larger effects observed in states that are bordered by other ban states and hence have long travel distances to reach facilities that remain open.”

For example, the estimated birth rate increase was larger in Mississippi (4.4 percent) and Texas (5.1 percent), where the “geography of bans renders interstate travel more costly,” the study said.

The news was celebrated by pro-life leaders.

“Absolutely amazing,” said Lila Rose, president and founder of Live Action. “32,000 boys and girls were saved, protected from being killed by abortion, because of the fall of Roe and the life-saving laws that went into effect. Every one of these children is a miracle. This is why we do this work.”

The official social media account of 40 Days for Life said in a post: “The ripple effect of Roe v. Wade’s overturning? A breathtaking wave of life, with 32,000 more babies born. Let’s celebrate every heartbeat, every breath, every new chance at life.”

The study’s authors are pro-choice. As of Nov. 1, 14 states “are enforcing bans on abortion in nearly all circumstances,” the study said, and 23 percent of U.S. women of reproductive age “have experienced an increase in driving distance to the nearest abortion facility, from an average of 43 miles one-way before Dobbs to 330 miles at present.”

“This represents the most profound transformation of the landscape of U.S. abortion access in 50 years,” the study said.

The Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision in June 2022 overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.
