Jesus' Coming Back

Karen Kingsbury Urges Families to Focus on ‘Peace and Reconciliation’ this Christmas

Bestselling author Karen Kingsbury says she is praying and hoping for peace within the nation’s families this Christmas season in light of the many divisions that have been revealed since the beginning of the pandemic.

Kingsbury recorded an Advent Devotional for Great American Pure Flix that focuses on peace and on Romans 12:18 (“As far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone”). She told Christian Headlines that too many families have been focused on what divides them instead of what unites them.

“Jesus would say: You actually have more to be united about because you can look to Me, and all the rest of it fades away,” Kingsbury told Christian Headlines.

Christmas, she said, is a great time to make peace with friends and family.

“It’s so important to have a devotional at Christmas time that deals with peace and with relationships. … There’s no greater time of the year than Christmas, where we take stock of our relationships, and we say, ‘How am I doing?’ Like [when] you’re writing out your Christmas cards — ‘How am I doing with my aunt or with my sister, my friends?’ It brings up the reality that, you know, maybe [it’s] not so good, maybe I left some things unsaid, or I didn’t forgive or I didn’t reach out as often as I would have wanted to.

“It’s a biblical principle that before you lay your gift at the altar, go and make peace with the people that you might have a problem with, and then bring your offering to God. And I just think that is where my advent devotional is coming from — is that before you open actual gifts, give yourself the gift of peace and reconciliation with the people you love.”

It’s been a busy few months for Kingsbury. Her latest book, a World War II love story called Just Once, was released in November. A movie based on one of her books, Someone Like You, will be released in theaters on April 2. An exclusive clip from that film aired on Great American Family in December during the network’s Great American Christmas event.

“I’ve been watching the Christmas movies on Great American, and they all have a very deep message of hope and healing,” she said. “These are things that people desperately need. I’m very proud of what they’re doing and their efforts to be a bright light in our culture.”
