DeSantis Endorses Trump after Dropping Out of the Presidential Race
Florida governor Ron DeSantis has announced that he has dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and will now endorse former presidential Donald Trump.
According to Fox News, DeSantis suspended his campaign on Sunday and announced his endorsement of Trump.
“It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance. They watched his presidency get stymied by relentless resistance, and they see Democrats using lawfare to this day to attack him,” DeSantis said in a video posted to X on Sunday.
“While I have had disagreements with Donald Trump, such as on the coronavirus pandemic and his elevation of [Dr.] Anthony Fauci, Trump is superior to the current incumbent, Joe Biden. That is clear.”
The Republican governor added that the reason he endorsed Trump is “because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear – a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism – that Nikki Haley represents.”
In response to DeSantis, Trump said he is “very honored” by his endorsement.
“Very honored to have his endorsement,” Trump told Fox News Digital. “I look forward to working together with him to beat Joe Biden, who is the worst and most corrupt president in the history of our country.”
Several other GOP lawmakers have also endorsed Trump as the 2024 Republican nominee, Fox News reports.
“In this race, there is one man who has a proven track record of being able to save our country and get us back on track: Donald Trump,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La, said. “He has done it once before, and I know he will do it again.”
“I am proud to endorse Donald Trump for president in 2024, and I look forward to working with President Trump and a Republican House and Senate to fight for those families who are struggling under the weight of Biden’s failed policies,” he said.
During an interview on Hannity, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said he is “proud” to endorse the former president.
“I look forward to supporting him enthusiastically,” he added.
Last November, House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., was the first Republican in the chamber to announce an endorsement of Trump.
“Republican voters determine who is the leader of the Republican Party, and it’s very clear President Trump is the leader of the Republican [P]arty. The media fails to report that we just won the midterms and flipped the House,” Stefanik told Breitbart News in a statement.
On Jan. 15, Trump won the Iowa caucus, which places him as the front-runner in the race. He is also leading in double digits in New Hampshire, ahead of Haley.
