Nearly 30 Percent of Gen Z Women Identify as LGBTQ, Survey Finds

According to a new Gallup survey, over one-in-five members of Generation Z currently identify as LGBT, with close to 30 percent of women falling into that category.

“Almost 30% of Gen Z women identify as LGBTQ+, most as bisexual,” Jeffrey Jones, a senior editor at Gallup, told NBC News.

The report found that approximately 22 percent of young adults ages 18-26 identify as LGBT, which is a higher percentage than the nearly one-in-10 Millennials — ages 27 to 42 years old — who fall into the same category. The percentage is lower than Generation X (5 percent), Baby Boomers (2 percent), and the Silent Generation (1 percent).

Overall, 7.6 percent of adults in the general population identified in 2023 as part of the LGBT community while slightly over 85 percent of those polled identified as heterosexual.

Jones noted that the majority of the increase is led by Gen Z women identifying as bisexual.

“That’s where a lot of the growth seems to be happening,” he said.

In early 2023, the CDC released materials urging public school educators and administrators to be involved be LGBT causes for the sake of inclusivity. The agency also published a “self-assessment tool” to help school officials see how much they support sexual minorities. Many families, however, have pushed back against the promotion of these ideas.

In Mid-February, two parents in Indiana petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to hold the Hoosier State accountable for removing their gender-confused son from their home in of their biblical convictions on sexuality and gender identity.

Last month, Mary and Jeremy Cox filed a Petition for Writ of Certiorari asking the court to review the legality of Indiana’s decision to take away their parental rights and remove their son, who identifies as a transgender girl, from their home due to their refusal to use female names and pronouns when addressing or referring to their child.

The removal occurred after the Indiana Department of Child Services launched an investigation in June 2021 into both parents.

“We just feel that at this point in time, this child needs to be in a home that’s not going to teach her that trans, like everything about transgender… tell her how she should think and how she should feel. However, she should be in a home where she is (accepted) for who she is, “the state agency contended, referring to the Cox’s son.

“If this can happen in Indiana, it can happen anywhere,” Lori Windham of Becket Law, the firm representing the couple said. “Tearing a child away from loving parents because of their religious beliefs, which are shared by millions of Americans, is an outrage to the law, parental rights, and basic human decency.”
