Poll: Voters Say Stopping Biden’s Border Invasion Is More Important Than Funding Ukraine

Battleground state swing voters overwhelmingly believe stopping President Biden’s border invasion is more important than bankrolling Ukraine’s forever war with Russia, a newly released poll found.

Conducted for the Heritage Foundation by RMG Research Inc., the survey of 1,000 likely swing-state voters found strong support for stopping the invasion at the U.S. southern border and little appetite for shipping more taxpayer dollars to Kyiv. When asked which they believe is more significant, 50 percent, a dramatic plurality of those polled, said it is more important to “secure the border” than to “provide funding for Ukraine.”

Only 11 percent said it is more important to continue funding Ukraine, while 29 percent said, “both equally.”

When further pressed on U.S. policy toward each issue, swing-vote respondents overwhelmingly indicated support for tackling the ongoing border crisis. Of those surveyed, 54 percent said the “best approach” for America is to “spend more to secure the U.S. border than to help Ukraine,” while 10 percent said the opposite. Meanwhile, 23 percent said the U.S. should spend an equal amount of money addressing both problems, while 12 percent are “not sure.”

The poll also found that likely voters are adamantly opposed to shipping more U.S. taxpayer dollars to Ukraine. Congress advanced $113 billion for Ukraine in 2022 alone, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Fifty-six percent of respondents think that’s too much. Just 3 percent of respondents said the U.S. has sent “far too little” assistance to Kyiv, with 9 percent saying it’s “somewhat too little.”

Equally significant, the vast majority of swing-state voters oppose Congress’s ongoing efforts to pass legislation containing more funds for Ukraine but nothing related to securing the U.S. border. A whopping 75 percent of Americans, 3 in 4, oppose such a proposal. Only 5 percent said they “strongly favor” the measure, and 12 percent said they “somewhat favor” it.

“Everyday Americans are fed up with rubberstamping the Swamp’s endless Ukraine funding,” Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts said in a statement. “Heritage’s latest polling reveals that not only are moderate voters in battleground states more interested in securing our own borders, they believe we have already spent enough helping Ukraine — and rightfully so.”

The survey was conducted April 2-4 among likely voters in Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, with a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
