Threat of major terror attack in places like New York City dangerously high: experts

The threat of a major terror event taking place on U.S. soil is at a dangerously high level with big cities like New York City and Washington, D.C. most vulnerable to an attack, terror experts are warning.

It’s been over 23 years since nearly 3,000 people perished on 9/11, but even though surveillance and airport security has been beefed up, the world has changed considerably since then.

Technology has become cheaper and more advanced, the internet is lightning fast and America’s open border means millions of unvetted people from all over the world are now living among the general population and continue to pour in at record rates.

“We are in a period where a number of factors are combining to make a terrorist attack on the homeland far more likely than it perhaps had been,” says Paul Mauro, a retired NYPD inspector who worked in counterterrorism for nearly 15 years.

Mauro said the risk of a potential new attack should be assessed in a criminal context – who has the means, motive and opportunity to successfully execute a deadly plot.

“The world has gotten a lot smaller since 9/11. You’ve got drones, the interconnectivity of the internet is more ubiquitous into areas that maybe didn’t have that connectivity. You can get an uplink using something like an Elon Musk satellite. You can get online from the mountains of the Hindu Kush, you’ve got AI capabilities, you’ve had all that time to develop capabilities since 9/11 if you are still in the [terror] business.” —>READ MORE HERE

With terror threats sky-high and the border wide open, brace for another 9/11:

The pre-9/11 warning lights are flashing once again, thanks largely to President Biden’s refusal to control the southern border.

That’s one of the key takeaways from of a new Foreign Affairs essay based on testimony and comments by top national-security experts.

Will America be caught asleep at the switch?

One ominous sign: As The Post reports exclusively, a sting last week nabbed six Russian nationals with suspected ISIS ties in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and New York — at least one of whom had been released by the feds at the southern border with a court date next year.

“Remember the Boston marathon” bombing, a source told The Post. “I’m afraid something like that might happen again — or worse.”

In the essay, Harvard prof Graham Allison and ex-CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell cite FBI Director Chris Wray’s increasingly alarming assessments of the nation’s “threat environment.”

In December, two months after Hamas’ Oct. 7 massacre in Israel, Wray testified that the already heightened terror threat had soared to “a whole ‘nother level,” as thousands crossed the border each day with little or no vetting.

By April, his fears grew even more dire after an ISIS-K attack at a Moscow concert hall killed 145 people and wounded hundreds.

Outgoing National Counterterrorism Center Director Christine Abizaid also raised alarms, citing the “elevated global threat environment.” —>READ MORE HERE
