Northern lights appear over Russia (IMAGES)

It is the latest aurora borealis phenomenon to be observed in the country this year

Residents of several Russian regions observed the northern lights on Sunday, according to numerous posts on social media. It is the latest display of the phenomenon, also known as aurora borealis, that Russians have been treated to this year.

People from the Siberian regions of Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Yakutia posted photographs of the natural wonder online. Sightings have also been reported in Western Russian regions of Tambov and Tver, as well as in Perm Region in the central part of the country.

The northern lights generally occur in the Earth’s polar regions between September and April.

The phenomenon is caused by solar storms, when charged particles from the Sun, mainly electrons and protons, interact with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere, creating an aurora.

Most aurora displays are predominantly green but can also include a range of other colors, such as pink, dark red, blue, and purple.

Stunning displays of the northern lights were also seen in various parts of Russia in March, April, and May, including places that are not usually treated to the light show, such as Moscow Region.
