With Sinwar Dead, It Looks Like Israel And The US Will Start Pursuing A Ceasefire Deal, But It Might Not Happen Until After The Election
For months there has been discussions on ceasefire talks, with the US pushing for an end to the conflict, but with Israel pulling back from such an agreement. According to Israeli and US officials, talks on a ceasefire deal have been static for two months due (in part) to Sinwar’s fanatic positions and because he was not open for communication. Now that Sinwar is officially dead, it looks like the Israeli government can argue that since the mastermind of the October 7th massacre is dead that officials can now move forward with a ceasefire agreement. According to Axios: “Netanyahu said Sinwar’s death is the beginning of the “day after” in Gaza without Hamas and that the group will not control Gaza anymore.” An aid to Netanyahu said:
“The return of our hostages is an opportunity to achieve all our goals and it brings the end of the war closer”
The Biden Administration will try to push for a ceasefire agreement, as we read Biden’s words:
“This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world … Yahya Sinwar was an insurmountable obstacle to achieving all of those goals. That obstacle no longer exists. But much work remains before us”
Trump did say that he told Netanyahu “to get this over with… It has to get over with fast. … Get your victory and get it over with. It has to stop, the killing has to stop.”
So it looks like the Israelis are waiting for the election to happen before agreeing on a ceasefire.
