Al-Julani, leader behind Aleppo attack, reportedly killed in Russian strike
The leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Abu Mohammad al-Julani, may have been killed in a Russian airstrike, according to Sunday morning Arab media reports, and pictures claiming to show his body have been circulating on social media.
HTS led the attack in recent days against the Assad Regime, during which significant parts of Aleppo were captured.
On Sunday, Russian media reported that the Russian defense ministry stated its air force had conducted strikes on Syrian rebels in support of the Syrian army.
The strikes targeted “militant concentrations, command posts, depots, and artillery positions” in Aleppo and Idlib provinces, the Russian state-run Russian Centre for the Reconciliation of the Enemy Parties in Syria stated.
HTS, a US-designated terror group, was formed in 2017 as a result of the reorganizations of several Syrian jihadist groups.
Who is al-Julani?
Al-Julani has been the group’s political and military leader since its formation and has conducted efforts to convince Western observers that his organization does not pose a threat to the West.
Assad’s regime had held Aleppo since 2016, when Russian-backed Syrian forces claimed victory over the rebels in the area.
This is a developing story.
