Suspected drug-smuggling tunnel discovered using drones at Arizona-Mexico border:
A smuggling tunnel still under construction was discovered by authorities at the Arizona-Mexico border – marking the third underground passage found in the area, officials said.
US Customs and Border Protection agents, along with Mexican authorities, spotted the tunnel’s entrance using drones in San Luis Río Colorado, a Mexican city just south of Yuma near the southern border, the secretariat of Public Security in Sonora announced on Dec. 26.
“Implementing the Border Security Protocol and using technology critical points were identified to strengthen surveillance in the area,” the law enforcement agency posted on Facebook with photos of the steep dirt tunnel.
Mexican authorities suspect a “narco tunnel” was being built to smuggle drugs or people under the border wall and into the US, according to AZ Family.
The tunnel has since been shut down. Authorities believe it was in its early stages of construction.
