Illegal Alien Allegedly Stole U.S. Citizen’s Identity, Committed Voter Fraud

An illegal alien faced voter fraud charges on Monday in federal court, after he allegedly lived in America for years under a citizen’s stolen identity.

Carlos Jose Abreu, a 45-year-old national from the Dominican Republic, faces charges of “impersonating a United States citizen when registering to vote and when voting in a federal election,” according to a Department of Justice press release. He also faces a charge for unlawful possession of a firearm.

“If convicted on the voter fraud and gun charges, Abreu faces up to 15 years in federal prison,” the release reads. “He is also subject to deportation.”

Abreu, of Broward County, Florida, allegedly used the stolen identity of an American to register to vote in September 2020 and to vote in November 2022, the release said. He had “been living in the United States under the assumed identity of the American citizen victim for about 18 years.”

The man has lived in America ever since he first entered illegally close to 20 years ago, according to the release. New Jersey issued an arrest warrant for Abreu in 2007 for charges of kidnapping, criminal restraint, endangering a child, and sexual assault. (According to court records, the latter two charges are still “outstanding,” and the case has been “transferred.”) He then relocated to Florida and allegedly stole an American citizen’s identity and acquired a Florida driver’s license and applied for a passport using the stolen identity, the release said.

Abreu is currently being held in a Broward County jail for the U.S. Marshals, according to sheriff’s office records. He was not allowed bond. The Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service investigated the case.

Legacy media outlets have long dismissed concerns over noncitizen voting as imaginary, with NPR claiming they stem from “a racist conspiracy theory known as the ‘great replacement.’” But potential fraudsters like Abreu show there are various security gaps in the system. For example, The Federalist found that the Oregon DMV registered more than 54,600 individuals of “unknown citizenship” to vote from June 2021 to October 2024.

President Donald Trump pledged to “make America safe again,” starting with enforcing immigration laws and enabling Immigration and Customs Enforcement to do its job. On Tuesday, the federal government sent the first planes of illegal aliens to Guantanamo Bay. As Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Fox Business, “He is no longer going to allow America to be a dumping ground for illegal criminals from nations all over this world.”
