JD Vance’s Glorious Make Europe Great Again Roast in Munich; A Stunning Rebuke to Europe’s Political Elites; JD Vance: Free Speech is in Retreat in Britain
JD Vance’s glorious Make Europe Great Again roast in Munich:
So it turns out that MEGA — “Make Europe Great Again” — is not just a slogan.
It’s not just a wistful line on caps worn by people on my side of the pond who wish we had a Trump-like figure to stir up Euro-politics.
No, it’s really happening. And its gun-totin’ chief is JD Vance.
Witness his glorious roasting of Europe’s leaders at the Munich Security Conference.
It was a delicious spectacle — a self-made millennial Yank torching the grey-faced technocrats of my sad, knackered continent.
He didn’t hold back. He eviscerated the assembled dignitaries for their failings on free speech, democracy and security.
He lamented “the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values” — words that will have resonated with millions of Europeans. I’m one of them.
It was on the freedom to speak that he made his most stinging comments.
“Across Europe, free speech, I fear, is in retreat,” he told his startled audience.
He rattled off recent acts of outrageous censorship that would have made Stalin beam with pride.
He mentioned police raids in Germany on citizens “suspected of posting anti-feminist comments online.” Criticizing feminism is a blasphemy in woke Germany.
He reminded us that just two weeks ago, a Christian activist in Sweden was convicted for burning copies of the Koran — despite the fact that his friend had just been murdered for doing the same.
Vance looked righteously aghast that Sweden would do something as cruel as convict a man of the “speechcrime” his buddy had just been slain for.
He rebuked my homeland, Britain, for its tragic “backslide away from conscience rights.”
The “basic liberties of religious Britons” are being throttled, he said.
He gave the example of Christians being arrested for “silently praying” near abortion clinics.
This really is happening. This once great nation that gave the world such game-changing freedom warriors as John Milton and John Stuart Mill now erects “buffer zones” around abortion clinics in which you can be nabbed by cops for praying in your own head.
Never mind “thoughtcrime” — Britain has “prayercrime.” —>READ MORE HERE
A stunning rebuke to Europe’s political elites:
With the benefit of hindsight, Vladimir Putin’s speech at the 2007 Munich Security Conference marked the beginning of the end of the post-Cold War order. The Russian president used his platform to rail against Nato’s eastward expansion, and the notion of a “unipolar world”, laying the groundwork for Russia’s future aggression towards Ukraine and the wider West.
US vice-president J D Vance’s address at the same conference may one day be spoken of in similar terms, marking the end of one Western security order and the beginning of another.
To an audience reeling from US defence secretary Pete Hegseth’s statements that Europe would have to begin to provide for its own defence, and from President Donald Trump’s signalling the imminent commencement of negotiations with Putin over Ukraine, Mr Vance addressed a series of blunt and stinging truths. Defence spending featured only briefly in his speech. Instead, his focus was on what the West was fighting for.
In Mr Vance’s words, the West claims to stand for “democracy”. It emerged from the Cold War victorious over an ideology that “neither valued nor respected all of the extraordinary blessings of liberty”. Yet today, EU “commissars” are threatening to “shut down social media during times of civil unrest” or where they “spot what they’ve judged to be ‘hateful content’”. Governments are punishing those who use their right to free expression to conduct actions some find offensive. And in Britain, religious liberties are “in the crosshairs”, with the state urging citizens to inform on those guilty of “thought crime”.
Europe, as he sees it, is a continent governed by regimes terrified of challenges to their legitimacy, with “old entrenched interests hiding behind ugly Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation” as they look to suppress political speech and dissent. While these leaders have talked about the threat posed by Russia and China, they have neglected “the threat from within”, and the retreat from the values we supposedly sought to defend.
Equally harsh criticism was directed towards the politicians who opened “the floodgates to millions of unvetted immigrants” over and above the heads of their electorates, and who have seemingly turned a blind eye to the consequences. As Mr Vance notes, events like those that unfolded in Germany on Thursday are “a result of a series of conscious decisions made by politicians”. Those politicians, in turn, should cease “running in fear” of their own voters, and begin to address their concerns. —>READ MORE HERE
