Illegal Migrant ‘gotaways’ Who Evade Arrest After Crossing Border Dropped 93% During Trump’s First Month in Office; Daily Average of Known Gotaways at Southern Border Plummets, Down 93% from Biden Administration Highs
Illegal migrant ‘gotaways’ who evade arrest after crossing border dropped 93% during Trump’s first month in office:
The number of illegal migrant “gotaways” who slip past border agents has plummeted more than 90% under President Trump’s show of force since reclaiming the White House less than a month ago.
Daily average gotaways — migrants who are detected crossing the border but elude apprehension — at the southern border dropped to just 132 at the beginning of February, down 93% from the average under former President Joe Biden, a Department of Homeland Security source told Fox News.
“Gotaways” include people spotted by agents, caught on camera or sensors or detected in another away.
Known gotaways reached 670,674 in FY 2023 — the most recent year available — or more than 1,800 per day, according to a Freedom of Information Act request obtained by Fox News.
While the actual number of successful border crossers is certainly higher, the drop shows that Trump’s effort to seal the border and deport illegal immigrants is working, a Department of Homeland Security source told The Post.
“It’s amazing how the previous president said he didn’t have the ability to do something but the ‘orange bad man’ comes in and suddenly we are heading toward record lows,” the source said.
Another border patrol source told The Post the gotaway numbers — which DHS normally does not reveal to the public — are a breath of fresh air for discouraged law enforcement.
“It’s a great feeling going to work knowing that we can actually enforce the law and that anyone caught is sent back to their country,” the agent said. —>READ MORE HERE
Daily average of known gotaways at southern border plummets, down 93% from Biden administration highs:
The daily average number of known gotaways — illegal migrants who successfully entered the U.S. without apprehension — at the southern border since the beginning of February has plummeted to just 132 per day, down 93% from the highest numbers when former President Joe Biden was in office, according to a senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) source.
During the Biden administration, Fox News submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for FY 2023 statistics and learned there were 670,674 known gotaways recorded that year, a jaw-dropping average of more than 1,800 per day.
President Donald Trump took office on Jan. 20, and has taken extensive measures to secure the southern border, resulting in a 93% drop in the daily average of known gotaways, who are “known” because they are seen/tracked on cameras, sensors, or other means, but border patrol agents were not able to apprehend them. These numbers are kept internally by CBP and are typically not released to the public.
“Delivering consequences has results. Illegal crossings are down, gotaways are down. Criminal prosecutions are on the rise,” the senior DHS official told Fox News. “Daily reports of large groups in Mexico, Guatemala, turning back south and surrendering to authorities, requesting to go home, and we have only just begun. Policy matters.”
The country began to see the effects of Trump’s policies in his second week in office, with the White House implementing tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China; border crossings plummeting; diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs shuttering; the federal workforce being faced with the decision to return to the office or to resign; and more. —>READ MORE HERE
