Trump admin launches probe into extremely lax HHS vetting for migrant kids that left thousands vulnerable to sex trafficking and exploitation:

The Department of Health and Human Services is launching an investigation into thousands of cases of unaccompanied migrant children who may have ended up in the hands of sexual predators and human traffickers because of lax vetting policies under the Biden administration.

An internal memo viewed by The Post details how the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) ignored obvious safety risks and prioritized quickly releasing the youths under the Unaccompanied Children Program (UAC), creating a situation that made vulnerable kids easy targets.

The report details egregious cases where migrant sponsors provided images that were obviously fake or doctored in their applications to obtain custody of children — and were seldom challenged by government staff tasked with protecting kids.

One photo, submitted by a man who wanted custody of a migrant child, showed the child’s mother crudely photoshopped into the image to claim he had a relationship with her. The mother’s feet were clipped off in the botched clip-art job.

In another case, a man used a Guatemalan photo ID that clearly was not him.

Another incident had a 23-year-old migrant who claimed he was a minor being held in a federal facility with migrant children. The man was documented reportedly asking kids “You want to have sex?”

“It was all about getting them out of custody as quickly as possible from the time the Border Patrol encountered them, to the time ORR found sponsorship,” a senior HHS source told The Post.

“When they were putting expediency over safety, that’s what created this problem.”

The investigation by the HHS Office of the General Counsel found “significant issues” in vetting sponsors, which enabled children to be placed in “overcrowded or unsafe living conditions” or with adults “extorting or exploiting children.” —>READ MORE HERE

Trump Administration Increases Vetting for Sponsors of Unaccompanied Minors:

On Friday, the Trump administration implemented new policies to increase the vetting for sponsors of unaccompanied alien children. The policies will be carried out by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), the agency within Health and Human Services (HHS) that supervises unaccompanied alien children (UACs) once the agency assumes custody of them from border officials.

ORR’s new policies are designed to close loopholes in the vetting of potential sponsors for unaccompanied minors. Now, ORR must conduct background checks on all adults in the sponsor’s household, and, to that end, require that all such adults submit fingerprints to the agency. In addition, ORR may now only accept unexpired and legible documents for the purpose of identifying potential sponsors. Further, such sponsors must present the original identification documents when being fingerprinted and upon release of the minor to his/her custody.

By improving the identification process, the Trump administration is taking steps to stop bad actors from assuming custody of migrant children. Sadly, there have been numerous reports of migrant children who have been placed into abusive households or even trafficked after being released from ORR. In 2023, a Florida Grand Jury found that tens of thousands of UACs had been placed with sponsors who were unknown to the minors and that the government was often unaware of who the sponsors were.

The Florida grand jury also detailed many instances of abuse and sexual assault of UACs after being placed with sponsors. In one instance, a minor was “pimped out” by an individual claiming to be the minor’s aunt but who was unknown to the minor prior to arriving in the United States. In another, a teenage female UAC was placed with a male sponsor with multiple unknown males living in the same residence. Other instances included female UACs placed in homes with all men and with no private bedrooms. The grand jury even found that eight UACs were placed with a human trafficking ring.

Similarly, a New York Times investigation concluded that many sponsors were forcing unaccompanied minors to work rather than go to school. As part of the investigation, the Times interviewed 60 ORR case workers who estimated that two-thirds of UACs end up working full time, often in dangerous jobs in the underground economy. —>READ MORE HERE
