Trump’s Tariffs And The Rise Of Multipolarity

There was an interesting article published on RT regarding Trump’s tariff policy. Its conclusion is that the US is being heavy with tariffs as a way to counter America’s biggest rivals Russia and China. The author, Angelo Giuliano writes that Trump’s tariff policy “reduces reliance on creditors like China, which holds a substantial share of US debt.” He goes on to write that:

“Under Trump, tariffs are distinctly an economic tool, advancing his America First agenda by prioritizing US interests, marking a shift from a globalist system under US leadership – where international cooperation and institutions prevailed – toward a US-centric imperialism that asserts dominance through economic might, potentially paving the way for a multipolar world defined by competing spheres of influence.”

If this multipolar world forms (outside of the power of China and Russia), that would mean new blocs of power forming. Germany would have most Europe as its own sphere of influence; and Turkey would have the Middle East as its own sphere of influence (and you already see this forming with Turkey controlling Syria). China and Japan vying over who is going to be the biggest power in Asia is an attestment to this rising multipolar world, since the two countries are rivaling over who is going to have the sphere of influence in Asia. In the Global Trends 2040 report (which is based on US intelligence) it reads that:

The lack of a preponderant power
or global consensus on some key areas will
offer opportunities for other actors to lead or
pursue their own interests, especially within
their regions. The European Union (EU), India,
Japan, Russia, and the United Kingdom most
likely will also be consequential in shaping
geopolitical and economic outcomes.

This “preponderant power” is obviously the United States. So the projected trend is an American withdrawal from its position as global police officer, thus resulting in the rise of regional powers such as Japan. This would mean that we can expect the tensions between China and Japan to only intensify. The same report says that “China, the EU, Japan, and other economic powers will also use their leverage to advance national security goals, further distorting markets.” Since the EU is dominated by Germany, we can expect the rise (really the revival) of German power and also the reemergence of Japan in Asia. The same trends report speaks of how by the 2040s the world will be “fragmented into several economic and security blocs of varying size and strength, centered on the United States, China, the EU, Russia, and a few regional powers, and focused on self-sufficiency, resiliency, and defense.”

What we can then expect is the rise of a multipolar world with various regional powers leading their own spheres of influence. There is a reason why the US wants to take Greenland. The US wants to become an arctic power and the Russians have already beaten the Americans in this pursuit.
