Houthi missile crashes at airport in first since war began as IDF fails at interception

Three people were mildly wounded on Sunday as a result of a Houthi missile that crashed in the area of Ben-Gurion Airport’s Terminal 3, Israel’s emergency service Magen David Adom said.

MDA medics and paramedics provided medical treatment to a 50-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman who were lightly wounded due to the blast, and a 32-year-old woman who was wounded on the way to the shelter.

The wounded were evacuated to and treated at Shamir Medical Center in Tzrifin, including one person in moderate condition in the trauma room and four in mild condition.

The access road to Terminal 3 suffered damage as a result of the crash. Although this is the first time a Houthi missile has hit Ben-Gurion Airport, this is not the first time one has struck Israeli territory.

Sources in the IDF said that they don’t know whether it was a direct crash from the missile or whether it was fragments from the missile that crashed in the area. Army Radio noted that the missile was not intercepted, however several attempts were made to intercept it.

United Hatzalah clarified that there was no impact within Ben-Gurion Airport’s airspace.

Following the attack on Sunday morning, Defense Minister Israel Katz responded, saying, “Whoever harms us will be struck sevenfold in return.”

Airport operations in light of the crash

Israel’s Airport Authority said that operations at the airport were temporarily frozen, with no departures or arrivals to take place. However, operations returned to normal approximately an hour after the original announcement. They also said they were investigating possible shrapnel in the airport area.

Police officers and police sappers have cordoned off the area and are investigating. They also noted that access to Ben-Gurion Airport is blocked at this stage.

On Saturday, sirens sounded in a number of areas in Israel following a missile launch from the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, which the IDF intercepted.

This is a developing story. Amichai Stein contributed to this report.
