‘I am grateful’: Trump lauds Edan Alexander’s impending release
US President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday the release of hostage Edan Alexander, who is being held captive by Hamas.
On his social media, the president wrote that he was “pleased to announce that Edan Alexander, a US citizen held captive since October 2023, is returning home to his family.”

“I am grateful to everyone involved in making this amazing news happen. This is a gesture of goodwill for the United States and for the efforts of mediators Qatar and Egypt,” the president wrote.
‘We must not rest until Edan is released’
US Vice President JD Vance noted in a statement on X/Twitter that he was praying for Hamas to follow through with Alexander’s safe release.
“If they [Hamas] do, it will have been another triumph of Steve Witkoff, who continues to face withering attacks for freeing hostages, negotiating complex diplomatic proposals, and serving his country (at great financial cost).”
Senator Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina) expressed mild skepticism at the media reports, but said that he was happy to see an American citizen come home.
“If media reports are accurate that the last American hostage Edan Alexander is going to be released then that is welcome news,” he wrote.
“Edan has suffered tremendously like all the hostages and it is always good to have Americans coming home. Over time, I am sure we will learn more about the negotiations that led to his release and the structure of the deal.”
Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer expressed his joy at Alexander’s release and called for the release of the remaining hostages.
“We’ve been waiting for this news a long time. It is wonderful that Edan Alexander—an American-Israeli citizen—reportedly will be released after over 580 days of Hamas’s brutal captivity,” he wrote.
“We must not rest until Edan is released and reunited with his family and until all the hostages are home.”
House Rep. Elise Stefanik praised the Alexander family for their courage during his time in Hamas captivity,
“Americans are praying for the reported impending release of Edan Alexander—the last living American hostage in Gaza. For nearly 600 days, this New Jersey native has been held in captivity in Hamas’ terror tunnels, denied even the most basic human dignity. His family has shown truly immovable commitment and strength as they advocated for his return,” she wrote.
“While we pray for Edan’s safe return, we must never forget that Hamas still holds the bodies of four other Americans. President Donald Trump remains fully committed to bringing every American—living or deceased—home and he has a record of delivering for these families who have faced the unthinkable.”
