Study: Abortion Lobby, Media’s Claims That Mifepristone Is ‘Safer Than Tylenol’ Are Hogwash
Abortion activists and their allies in the corporate media often claim that the dangerous drug regimen used to complete more than half of the nation’s abortions is safer than some over-the-counter medicines. A new peer-reviewed study, however, found that the abortion lobby’s attempt to paint mifepristone as less harmful than Tylenol is rooted in activism instead of science.
CNN, Bloomberg, NBC News, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Vox, and USA Today (more than once) have all repeated Planned Parenthood’s evidence-free claim that the drug regimen responsible for a majority of the nation’s abortions is “safer than many other medicines like penicillin, Tylenol, and Viagra.”
Even Google’s AI Gemini, which writes the first answer box that populates after a user search questioning the safety of mifepristone, claims that the drug “is generally safer than Tylenol (acetaminophen) in terms of serious medical complications.”

The movement to convince women that the abortion pill is “safe and effective” only ramped up in the face of the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson decision. Yet, as recent studies have further proven, it’s pure deception.
The latest revelation came in a study from the Charlotte Lozier Institute’s Director of Life Sciences Dr. Cameron Louttit, who found that assertions that mifepristone is safer than some household medications are “wholly unfounded, offering deficient and disingenuous representations of safety for any of the drugs compared.”
“For years now, the abortion lobby’s claim that abortion drugs are ‘safer than Tylenol’ has dominated public discussion, propelled by the illusion of scientific consensus. However, no such support exists,” Louttit said in a statement. “This baseless claim, repeated by medical societies, politicians, media pundits and researchers, has profoundly influenced public opinion and policy. But as this paper details, those spreading it lack the evidence they routinely claim.”
Yet, media and abortion activists continued their quest to erase the dangers of the drug.
“The pace at which these claims have proliferated, the breadth of venues in which they are offered, and the now growing assignment of them to the realm of common fact collectively demonstrate the profound ramifications of failing to identify them as what they are: unfounded, misleading, and entirely dangerous assertions,” Louttit concluded. “We can and should demand more of those who present drug safety data in this manner and oppose the use of these claims in informing regulation, policy, and patient decision-making.”
Another study recently released by the Ethics and Public Policy Center found the rate of life-threatening complications due to mifepristone is at least 22 times higher than what the FDA and the abortion pill’s manufacturer suggest. The serious adverse events listed in the study range from emergency room visits to hemorrhage, sepsis, infection, and/or follow-up surgeries for the women who had taken the abortion drug within the 45 days of those complications.
The conclusions outlined by the CLI and EPPC researchers further confirm that mifepristone hurts and kills more women and babies than abortionists and their media sidekicks are willing to admit. They also fuel the ongoing push for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to reevaluate the drug’s approval or at least reinstate the safeguards ripped away by the Obama and Biden administrations.
