British Museum Under Pressure To Return Looted Hello Kitty Phone Case To Mall Kiosk
LONDON—Facing numerous calls for the institution to finally make amends for historical wrongs, the British Museum was under pressure Tuesday to return a looted Hello Kitty phone case to a mall kiosk. “It is long past time for the British Museum to atone for its sins and return this novelty Hello Kitty phone case to its rightful home at the kiosk in the center of Mantri Square Mall in Bengaluru, India,” said activist Siobhan Keogh, noting that the British Museum had not even issued a formal acknowledgement of the fact that Queen Elizabeth II had shoplifted the iPhone 6s case in the shape of the popular anthropomorphic cat character in 2015. “That Hello Kitty phone case, beyond being an integral part of mall culture, is a symbol of the economic and physiological abuse these kiosk owners have been forced to endure at the hands of British colonialism. It is unconscionable that the museum would withhold these socially significant and important kitschy accessories from the fifth-grade girls to whom they belong.” At press time, the British Museum was facing increased criticism after claiming the mall kiosk would not be able to properly care for the prized Hello Kitty phone case.
