Ohtani Generously Donates 7 At-Bats’ Worth Of Salary To California Fire Victims
LOS ANGELES, CA — As the surrounding areas of Los Angeles faced the daunting task of rebuilding after the devastation left in the wake of massive wildfires, Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani generously announced that he would be donating 7 at-bats’ worth of his salary to fire victims.
The record-breaking slugger said he wanted to contribute to relief efforts and help his fellow California residents who lost everything in the blazes, even going so far as to pledge to give $500,000, or roughly the amount of money he earns in a game and a half of plate appearances.
“It’s the least I could do,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. “I sat at watched the horrifying footage on the news just like everyone else. I knew that, as a person in a position of privilege, it was important for me to set an example and do what I could to help people affected by the wildfires. That’s why I’m choosing to give away roughly one percent of my salary.”
Ohtani’s announcement was hailed by fans and members of the media. “It’s amazing to see such generosity,” said Dodgers fan Jim Garrett. “It’s too common these days to view professional athletes as entitled, spoiled prima donnas who greedily hoard their tens of millions of dollars for themselves. No Shohei Ohtani. He’s putting his money where his mouth is by donating 7/636ths of his salary. He’s really sacrificing here.”
At publishing time, experts did the math and determined that Ohtani’s gracious gesture would be able to help one lucky Pacific Palisades resident rebuild one-sixth of their house.
