Elizabeth Warren Asks RFK Jr. How He Will Address Outbreak Of Smallpox From White Man’s Blankets
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a heated exchange during Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Elizabeth Warren asked RFK Jr. how he would address the outbreak of smallpox from the white man’s blankets.
Kennedy faced intense questioning from multiple members of the committee ranging from his views on abortion and vaccines to disease research and baby onesies, with Warren’s savage question taking center stage in the contentious hearing.
“And what of smallpox outbreak from paleface blankets?” a proud and stoic Warren asked. “We make’em trade. Buffalo hide for blankets. Tribe use’em blankets. Many get sick. White man cheat on trade to make’em people sick. Medicine cost much wampum. We no like’em white man tricks. What white man Kennedy do to make right?”
Kennedy testified that he knew nothing of the blanket trade or whether they had been intentionally laced with smallpox to cause an outbreak, but Warren expressed disbelief as she continued on the warpath. “Me no trust’em paleface,” she said. “White man has been deceiving my people since the moon of the popping trees, when the Great Eagle Spirit rose from the river. Now, buffalo are scarce in the lands, and fire water flows. Me no trust’em Kennedy. Me vote’em ‘no’ on RFK.”
Following the tense hearing, Warren reportedly reached out to Kennedy to ask if the two of them could bury the hatchet and schedule a time when they could have a powwow to discuss an acceptable compromise and smoke’em peace pipe.
